If you've spent any time in downtown New Bern recently, you've probably heard the excitement surrounding one of the city's newest wedding and event venues: Magnolia Manor 1843.

Nestled in the heart of historic downtown New Bern, this breathtaking property has quickly become one of the most talked-about venues in Eastern North Carolina. From the second-floor windows, guests can enjoy stunning views of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, while also taking in the charm and beauty of New Bern's historic district. Located just steps away from Union Point Park, Tryon Palace, the birthplace of Pepsi, and countless local shops and restaurants, Magnolia Manor 1843 offers an unforgettable experience for couples and guests alike.

At Weddings and Events by Frankie Hill, we've already had the privilege of being part of one of the venue's first events, with several more weddings on the calendar this year. We are incredibly excited to watch this venue flourish and were thrilled when owner Leigh Fulcher agreed to sit down with us and share the story behind Magnolia Manor 1843.

Why Buy This Historic House?

What inspired you to restore and steward this historic home?

Leigh:

"Our love for history and homes with stories to tell is what first drew us in. The craftsmanship and architectural details simply cannot be replicated in new construction—there is a depth and character that only time can create. We were captivated by the mystery of nearly 180 years of families, laughter, and love that once filled these rooms.

Long before Magnolia Manor 1843 became what it is today, we could see beyond the chipped paint, weathered wood, and overgrown gardens. We envisioned its beauty and potential from the very beginning. Restoring this home has been both a challenge and a profound joy—a meaningful journey in our lives. Bringing something so historic and beautiful back to life, and now sharing it with our community, is truly an honor."

From the moment you step onto the property, it's easy to see the passion and dedication that has gone into every detail of the restoration.

How Did You Come Up with the Name?

Leigh:

"The name came quite naturally to us. We were immediately captivated by the breathtaking 200-year-old magnolia tree that stands as a focal point of the property—a living piece of history that anchors the entire estate. It felt only fitting to honor such a timeless symbol in the name itself.

Given the stately architecture and refined presence of the home, 'Magnolia Manor' flowed effortlessly and reflected its Southern elegance. Including 1843—the year the home was built—was equally important to us. It grounds the name in history and pays tribute to the generations who came before. And so, Magnolia Manor 1843 was born."

The magnificent magnolia tree truly serves as the heart of the property and creates an incredible backdrop for ceremonies and celebrations.

Was Owning a Wedding Venue Always the Dream?

Leigh:

"Owning a wedding venue was not necessarily the original dream—but being dreamers at heart certainly was.

David and I have always been natural entrepreneurs, inspired by the challenge of taking an idea and watching it unfold through vision and hard work. We've long shared a love for historic homes and timeless architecture, so falling in love with this house felt incredibly natural.

We initially toured the property simply because we had admired it for years, never imagining what it might become. But as we walked the grounds, something shifted. The home and gardens seemed to quietly reveal their potential."

As Leigh describes it, every part of the property naturally evolved into a wedding experience. The gardens provide beautiful transitions from ceremony to cocktail hour and reception, while the home's thoughtfully restored spaces now serve as luxurious bridal accommodations, groom's quarters, and guest suites.

"It may not have begun as a specific dream of owning a wedding venue—but it has become a true honor to steward this historic home and offer it as a place where couples can celebrate the beginning of their own love stories."

What Is Your Favorite Part About Owning Magnolia Manor 1843?

Leigh:

"That is such a difficult question because we have been blessed in so many ways.

There is an overwhelming sense of accomplishment in taking on a project of this magnitude and watching the beauty we always believed was there come fully back to life. Seeing that vision realized has been incredibly rewarding."

One of the things Leigh spoke most passionately about was the support from both the local community and fellow wedding professionals throughout Eastern North Carolina.

"The businesses in New Bern have welcomed us with open arms, and the relationships we've built within the wedding industry feel less like networking and more like friendship. There is a genuine sense of community here."

As wedding professionals ourselves, we couldn't agree more.

Do You Have a Favorite Room?

Bridal Suite

When asked if she has a favorite room inside the home, Leigh admitted the question is nearly impossible to answer.

"Every room holds significance because we thoughtfully restored each one. They all carry a piece of our heart. The journey was long and, at times, strenuous—but standing here now, it feels as though this was always meant to be part of our life's work."

That love and care can be felt throughout the property, from the elegant gathering spaces to the beautifully appointed guest suites.
